Timberframe Construction

Timberframe Lodges or Homes

Timberframe Lodge on Turn IslandOver the years, Timberwright has used many different types of building systems. We have experience with “Stick Frame Construction”, “Log Construction” and “Timberframe Construction”.

In today’s economy our customers are increasingly concerned about the impact they are having on the environment and the costs of construction, operations and maintenance. When considering all these concerns, we at Timberwright strongly believe that “Timberframe” is the very best overall building system.

Timberframe construction is comprised of a structurally engineered wood frame (the timberframe) and overlayed onto this timberframe is a system of structurally insulated panels (SIPS panels). The combination of the timberframe and the SIPs panels provide an air tight, well insulated structure that will last a lifetime.

One significant advantage of timberframe construction for remote locations is our ability to pre-build the timberframe structure in our plant. This ensures that everything fits before it is delivered to your building site. And, the overall build time on your site is significantly less than using standard stick frame construction. And, there is very little debris left once the timberframe building is complete compared to stick frame construction. This reduces your costs and is environmentally responsible

The quicker your building can be erected and completed to lockup the less time you will be paying builders to be on site which results in real overall cost savings.

Timberframe Bent DetailsTimberframe construction has developed over thousands of years in many countries according to the availability of trees, the need for security and the need to resist cold tough winters. Distinctive styles have developed according to the needs and imagination of the region. War, raiding and the natural movement of people integrated styles. There are timberframe structures over a thousand years old which are a testament to the enduring structural integrity and earthquake resistance of timberframe construction.

Here in Canada the British and French agreed on one thing: the post and beam method of construction for all their forts and houses. The British called the style “Red River Frame” or “Hudson’s Bay Corner” and this was colonial Canada’s first building method.

Early in the 20th Century an Architectural revolution began in England and spread to America. This was an Arts and Crafts Movement which introduced beauty to houses rather than functionality. Sawmills became efficient and able to mass produce dimensional lumber. Timberframe and log post and beam became dormant. In the mid 1960’s a counter culture movement stimulated a resurgence in alternative building methods. A new generation of portable inexpensive power tools led to the re-establishment of the log and timber building industry. Timberframe moved beyond functional structures to Arts and Crafts.

Timberframe Interior FinishingIn a modern timberframe designs, we have the option of using Kiln Dried timber and steel connection hardware to increase the strength and earthquake resistance of a timberframe structure.

If we, as builders and homeowners, design and build timberframe structures with a 500 year life span then this is enough time for the trees we consumed for the structure to be replanted and to grow into old growth forests.

If you are convinced of the merits and the look of timberframe design and are looking for a company with over 25 years experience building such structures, please contact us. Timberwright has the experience and the passion to make your “Timberframe Dream” a reality.
